UConn’s Andre Drummond Says Not Close To Making Decision On Future
This report filed by The Courant’s Dom Amore:
A few hours after UConn sophomore forward Jeremy Lamb announced he was going to the NBA, freshman teammate Andre Drummond said he was still not close to making a decision his future.
“Nope,” Drummond said when asked if he was close to deciding about staying with the Huskies or going pro.
“I’m here now, that’s all that matters,” he said Tuesday around 5 p.m. as he walked from Gampel Pavilion. “I’m working on my game. Right now I’m heading to class.”
Drummond is projected by most exports to be a top-10 pick if he were to chose to leave. He and his family have been doing their homework and have spoken several times with coach Jim Calhoun. He has until April 29 to make his final decision.

Top 10 UConn players:

Yo, Nine. Are you absolutely sure Clifford Robinson was a Calhoun recruit?
Definitely made a mistake. Fixed it a little while ago. Thanks.
Nine, you are a clown. Calhoun joined UCONN in ’86 and Robinson got to campus in ’85. Nice to ruin any credibility.
Seth, I assume you meant to write something like “Nice way to ruin any credibility.” or “Nice job ruining any credibility.”, since the words “Nice to ruin any credibility.” don’t actually make any sense in context. Please clarify if that assumption is incorrect.
In any case, and more to the point, why should anyone give any credence to what YOU have to say about Nine’s “credibility”? How about this: instead of making meaningless pronouncements about the credibility of someone’s blog on the basis of a factual error that has no impact whatsoever on the arguments that the guy is trying to make, why don’t you go ahead and actually interact with the arguments themselves. That way you can demonstrate that Nine is indeed a “clown”, to whom no “credibility”should be attributed. Not worth your time, you say? Then what makes you think its worth anyone’s time reading anything you write (e.g., your weak comment above)?
He needs a lot more work on the college level. He needs to stay another year.
He needs another year, at least, of college experience.
We tend to look at Drummond as somewhat of a promise unfilfilled, but he actually did well in his freshman campaign. He was by far the best rebounder on the team, and his point total was third-best on the team. His FT shooting was abysmal, but that can easily improve (can’t get much worse!). The issue is whether he wants to stick around for a season that will end way too early to learn how to play as a big man. He seems to enjoy being a student, and just maybe he’s considering another year or two of tutelage under Jim Calhoun. On the other hand, his draft position probably won’t go much higher than it will be this June. Here’s what he needs to consider: If he stays for another year or two, he’ll be a starter in the NBA when he goes. If he goes now, he’ll sit on the bench until he learns to play with his back to the hoop. If someone offered me millions of dollars to play basketball for a few years, I’d go in a heartbeat, but I have no basketball talent. Drummond is smart, and I’m sure he can see the value in learning to play basketball well rather than simply relying on his physical gifts.
I think if he stays and shows improvement and adds a post-move or two, he’ll be a lock for the #1 pick next year. Hopefully he’ll spend his first couple years of benchwarming improving his post skills instead of feeling bad for himself. He has the athleticism, we’ll see if he has the work ethic.
I actually don’t even fully understand how I ended up right here, but I thought this article was excellent. I don’t know who you are but most certainly you’re going to a prominent blogger if you are not by now
de ja vu, Cliff, best athlete to come out of UCONN. Top ten talent, 2nd round pick but still my favorite Husky.
it looks like your web page ate my first remark (it was very lengthy) so I think I’ll just sum it up what I sent in and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your weblog. I too am an aspiring blog site blogger but I’m still brand new to almost everything. Do you have any valuable hints for inexperienced blog writers? I’d absolutely appreciate it.I heard somebody talking about this on the radio yesterday, but I can’t remember what station it was.
First, Cliff wasn’t a Jimmy Calhoun recruit. But, regardless it is fun to consider the best evah
Ray Allen is my number one. He was so exciting and could make shots from all over the floor. The drive vs. Iverson was amazing in the BET. Plus, he made everyone around him better. I mean, he was an amazing athlete to watch in college and still is quite a talented guy in the NBA. I don’t know how he is not at the top of all Huskies’ best-of lists, but whatever, it’s all opinion.
Richard Hamilton is a fairly close second. Like Ray, Rip had a way of making big shots in key moments (Washington, for example). He was a shooter who could penetrate and dish. Great athlete. Great person. We miss kids like Rip.
Beyond that, it’s hard to ascertain. Ben Gordon and Emeka Okafor were great college players who won a lot of games together. It was a wonderful inside-out duo.
Emeka was a great forward, someone that really developed during his time at UConn. And Gordon stepped up huge — particularly in his junior season — and most fans appreciated his shot. But he’s not particularly tall or fast.
Kemba. Fast. Athletic. Daring. Physical. Shooter. Driver. Passer. He is probably a worthy number 3 if only because he essentially willed a team to a title. Okafor and Gordon follow. That is my top five.
On Drummond: hats off to the guy. Everyone’s telling him he’s a lottery pick and he’s smart enough to consider that a) he may not be a lottery pick and b) he may want to learn more game before he gets paid lots for it.
HA! So much for Andre not being close to making a decision.
