You may recall Asjha Jones, the former UConn star and USA Olympian?
She decided not to play in the WNBA this season to rest accumulated aches and pains, a decision made shortly after Mike Thibault was fired by the Connecticut Sun.
Without Jones, the Sun had their worst season in history.
Well, Jones is ready to play again where the money is really made – in Russia.
Jones will play for former four-time champions Sparta&K, the veteran on a team with primarily young, Russian players.
On the team’s website recently she seemed happy to be there
“It is a club with a great reputation for winning and treating their players well,” Jones said. “This year we will be young, but we also have a lot of players that have plenty of playing experience.
“This will be their time to show how good they really are. ”
The team’s executive director, Anna Arkhipova Von Kalmanovic, is thrilled to have Jones.
“Asjha is a great addition to our team and we are expecting her to become a leader, just as she was in Rivas Ecopolis who reached the EuroLeague Women Final in Istanbul a few years ago with a very young team,” she said.
Jones has already played six seasons in Russia with CSKA Moscow and UMMC Ekaterinburg. Jones played for Kayseri Kaski spor last season, averaging 13.3 points and 5.9 rebounds in EuroCup Women to help her team to the finals.
Meanwhile, there is no indication yet whether Jones will return to the WNBA next season, either with or without the Sun.
