Well, if you thought the WNBA couldn’t be as caustic a business as the remainder of pro sports, here’s something for you.

Marynell Meadors, the coach and GM of the Atlanta Dream, the two-time defending Eastern Conference champion, has been fired by ownership. She was let go Monday.

Need we remind you that Meadors also was an assistant to Geno Auriemma on the 2010 World Championship and 2012 Olympic team. And it was a Geno tweet about what had happened that apparently brought the news to light today.

Attention is naturally focused on Meadors’ relationship, or lack thereof, with Atlanta superstar Angel McCoughtry, who was on the Olympic team.

Geno’s tweet seemed to imply that Atlanta ownership may have cowered to McCoughtry’s demands that Meadors go. If that is so – Atlanta is third in the East this season – then add Angel to the Dwight Howard, Kobe Bryant list of divas who major in coach firings.

Gee, what happened over there in London? Big Syl also has been away from her team for personal reasons. It’s doubtful any of this is connected, but between injuries and other stuff, the returning gold medalists have had a tough time. And I don’t mean the 3×3 winners…

  2. Angel McBeeatch says:

Ironic that her name is Angel.

Of course Geno preferred playing UConn players in the Olympics. He made sure everyone knew it by starting 4 Huskies, while having the Best overall player in the world, CP, coming off the bench.

Geno Haters are bashing him for Not playing McB enough. Too bad. She needed to be put in her place on the biggest of stages.

Make no mistake about it. USA would have Won the Gold without McB. On a side note, USA would also have Won the Gold without Seimone, who Never won a WNBA title without Maya.

McB has More given athletic talent than Maya. She is a Better defender than Maya. And she has a Better offensive game than Maya. McB has the 2nd best Overall Game in WBB, behind CP.

Maya and CP have multiple NCAA tiles and at least one WNBA title. Note to McB: basketball is a Team game and the Head Coach is Not your friend.

    Fix. Your. Attitude.

IDK about that…If Maya played more of an individual game like McB and CP then she would look more athletic than them.

      • Dark Angel says:

Did you forget that Geno could not get Maya to drive to the hoop until her senior season? And then Maya only drove to the hoop during the 1st half of the season. I am not talking about break away layups. Maya rarely if ever pumped faked and drove by a player. If you have DVDs of UConn games, you will notice Maya rarely if ever dribbled more than 3 times. She seemed very uncomfortable handling the ball for someone who is in the Top 10 All Time WCBB players.

        • fanofit says:

Not a big dribbler then as much as do everything else. Tina not an all american without incredible outside in passing by Maya. But now Maya is learning to dribble drive quite nicely.

    • Brittany says:

      Fallen Angel, more like.

    • Cheryl says:

Amen! Even MJ said he didn’t win by himself, it took a team! I remember last year when her coach sent another playr in to relieve the little Angel and she refsed to come of the court. Get out of the game Angel, I don’t care how skilled you are..you need an attitude adjustment. Someone will give that coach a good job. Your gold medal should be taken away..no one wants people like you representing the USA..go away!!!

  3. genosguy says:

BE MVP–Maya or Angel.?? Angel. But Maya was more important to her team. Maya is who everyone wants on their team. Who goes along for team wins. It will be a cold day in H—- if Maya ever becomes a diva. Louisville Collins had nothing but trouble with Angel—her feelings of self importance were evident then. I thought Geno liked Angel. But Geno will get along with the Devils assistant if it leads to wins. Shame on any organization that caters to players over coaches—you then have the inmates running the crazy house.

    • Cheryl says:

I heard Angel couldn’t even get into a college until went to a prep school, and no one wanted her but Louisville!
And I was told that face to face by a women’s college coach who is consistanly in the top 5 in the country. I won’t tell her name. But she told me that when I asked her what she would have done as acoach, if a player refused to come off the court when she was told to. She said she would have sent her to the locker room immediatly and suspended her.

  4. JamesKerwin says:

Candace Parker is an amazing talent–but wasn’t that impressive in the Olympics. Maya plays a better game all around than Angel. Angel was such a witch Collins (then in Louieville) sat her during a big game because she refused to listen to him. Angel is known as a “VOLUME” shooter—her percentages are terrible. If Maya shot that number of times–she’d be scoring 100 every night. No player should have a say in who is coaching. Results are what a coach should be judged on. Not how well they play nice nice with the players—he’s/she’s coach not a friend.

This decision will curse ATL for a long time. To remove a coach that made it to championship back to back is plain nuts.

  6. CT_OR_Guy says:

Think this has something to do with Geno not wanting to return as Olympic coach???

    • Dark Angel says:

More like Geno knows there will Not be 6 UConn players in the 2016 Olympics.

      Jones – no
      Cash – no
      Bird – backup at best
Taurasi – injuries might force her to retire
      Tina – backup to Griner
      Maya – probably
Stewart – still think she has an underlying medical issue that will rear its ugly head while at UConn

  7. Fishpaw31 says:

Her teammates at Louisville didn’t call her “The Crazy Aunt” for nothing! Keep far away from her, Tiffany!

  8. BKDad says:

Well, she now has quality time to consider her options.

  9. Davi- says:

Sh** happens; she is a great basketball player and the coach will move on…What is the big thing about this situation?

    • Angel McBeeatch says:

It’s big enough for you to read the comments and reply. That’s how big.

  10. Clare O'Neill says:

Angel is the crowned successor to Chamique Holdsclaw as the biggest malcontent / nutjob in the WNBA. Talent isn’t everything.

  11. Maya wasn’t as athletic, maybe. The percentages thrown around by Dark Angel may or may not be correct. Walz controlled her, a bit when she was on his team. He got into her head.
Maya didn’t drive until her Senior year–true. That’s why I like KML and think she will be more of an impact. Albeit she thinks too much, but she got better at just doing near the end of the year.

No player should control if the coach stays or leaves unless she hits on the players (LSU??).

    • Dark Angel says:

Percentages listed were from WNBA.com on 08/28/2012 at 8:36pm.

    • fanofit says:

Maya gives herself to total team play. That means doing the dirty work. That stuff doesn’t always look athletic. I have seen Maya perform some athletic moves that I have not seen by anyone else. But when the Lynx need a momentum change, they go to Maya or Semone. The biggest value of a player is the “Clutch Factor”. Maya and Semone are tops in that.

  12. Jeff says:

First: Geno played a different lineup quite often in the Olympics. He did NOT pick the team–a committee did. Of course there was six Uconn players on the team. If u didn’t notice, Uconn has had the best players and teams over the last decade.
Second: CP had her chance at the Olympics and sucked most of the time. Taurasi was the highest scorer on the Olympic team and was not even 100 percent. Diana is the best player in the world and Tina Charles and Maya are right behind her. Catchings and CP are close but not in the same category as the Uconn players. Moore won a title with the Lynx and Taurasi with Pheonix–CP and Catchings have won nothing. Angel is also a top player but still not in the same level as the Uconn players. Geno played all players during the Olympics and was not biased at all. Did u notice that Cash and Jones played the least??? He played the best backcourt in history (Bird/Taurasi) and too bad for u haters they are former Uconn players. Geno is a mastermind coach who played the best combinations and he wound up with the GOLD. Didn’t need CP to start either–they won with a combo of Uconn and non Uconn players. We all knew the haters would come out when Uconn put 6 and Tennessee only 2 on the Olympic roster. Guess Uconn has the best of the best. Too bad for the haters lol.
