Boston College Makes It Official: Engeln An Eagle
Lauren Engeln’s transfer from UConn to Boston College was made official Monday by a press release from the Eagles’ program. Here it is:
Boston College women’s basketball head coach Erick Johnson announced this afternoon that junior Lauren Engeln will join the Eagles after transferring from the University of Connecticut. The 5-foot-10 forward will sit out the 2012-13 season.
“Lauren is a great addition to our program in many ways. Our system puts a premium on skilled guard play and she will fit our style very well,” said Johnson. “Lauren is a guard who can score in a variety of ways and can create opportunities for her teammates. Her love for the game of basketball and enthusiasm for practicing and competing will make an immediate impact on our team, even during her red-shirt year.”
Engeln, a native of Laguna Hills, Calif., appeared in 25 games in the 2011-12 season for the Huskies. She averaged 6.6 minutes and 1.2 points per game. She played a season-high 16 minutes vs. North Carolina on Jan. 16, 2011. Engeln scored a career-high of eight points vs. Sacred Heart as a freshman. She also played a career-high 18 minutes in the win over Howard on Nov. 21, 2010.
Prior to her arrival at Connecticut, Engeln played for Laguna Hills High School and averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds per game as a senior. She was rated the No. 95 recruit nationally by ESPN Hoopgurlz. Engeln was also ranked at No. 50 by Blue Star and No. 43 by the All-Star Girls Report.

Engeln was Overrated by all 3 HS ranking systems. All-Star Girls Report and Blue Star should shut down since they cannot spot talent outside the obvious Top 20. Engeln’s short stay at UConn had nothing to do with any lack of effort. Engeln does Not have legitimate talent to play D1 Top 50 basketball. She is slow and has no go to shots or moves. And she needs to Fix her silly stance at the FT line because it is Not helping her. Enjoy the View from BC’s bench. No more FF, EE, or SS for you.
Angel if you were wanting to get a rise out of UConn fans —you did it. I agree with two things you said–she does not have the talent for UConn (at this time) and the rating systems are flawed. BC is a Div 1 program playing in the ACC (big time basketball conf). BC was a huge basketball school since Bob Couzy–one of the best guards ever to put on a uniform. Lauren deserves only the best in what ever she does. Uconn fans enjoyed her here–and we hoped she’d be what we expected–no crime in that. I bet she loved playing for Geno. Lauren can tell BC what being at the final 4 three times is like.
genosguy –
Bob Cousy went to HOLY CROSS, not BC.
Why is this even a story?
It just displays the gulf between UConn women’s basketball and BC.
Angel McBeeatch, why are you such a beeatch? I would think that you would be happy to see Lauren go. Of course, we all know that you could play better than Lauren. Shut your mouth and let Lauren try at Boston College. I am looking forward to seeing her play at Boston College.
A) Bob Cousy played at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. At one time, it was a power house basketball school.
B) Ms Engeln tried. Mightily, by all accounts. She just couldn’t crack the top tier of the team. Probably for a bunch of reasons. Now, she wants more of a chance to play. We all seem to forget that for all but a few kids, college athletics is an extracurricular activity that is supposed to be rewarding and fun. Only those few can make it part of their vocation after graduation. So, if a kid wants to concentrate on studies or transfer to a place where they can get more playing time, what’s the problem?
BKdad –Bob Cousy Coached at BC after playing got Boston Celtics. Holy Cross Was a power house with superb talent.
B–Engeln is a nice girl, tried (only Geno knows for sure) maybe. But she didn’t have the talent on a consistent basis to be a UConn starter or even good sub. This is just what it was –no knock on her. I wanted to play for UConn–but couldn’t make the grade, so I coached. We are what we are.
She may or may not get more playing time–BC is now ACC which is a demanding Basketball conference. But we’ll all see.
Engeln could whip my butt in hoops. The point is the ratings systems are not trustworthy after the obvious super stars that UConn, Stanford, Notre Dame, Baylor, Duke, etc go after.
Go back and read JA’s blogs during the past 2 years. There were UConn fans acting like Engeln would shine if Geno would just give her a chance.
Truth is she never had a chance. All the UConn coaches knew it. Engeln knew it. But she enjoyed 2 Final Four trips.
Geno in his great wisdom intentionally recruited bench players like Engeln and Johnson (and Kerns et el). Geno knew his chances of signing Stewart and Tuck and Jefferson would be beter if those HS players saw a shorter rotation for the 2012-13 season.
Seriously doubt Geno would have signed all 3 if UConn was going to be 9 or 10 deep Without them. You know HS superstars want to play D1 Top 20 WBB from day 1.
UConn’s player rotation minutes for the 2012-13 season are already claimed, unless there is a rash of severe injuries. That is a big reason why Geno has been more concerned with recruiting 2014 HS players than 2013.
I do not follow BC WBB. I have no idea if Engeln will be in the normal rotation for 2 years at BC. I am just curious why she did not sign with a D1 or D2 team in CA so her twin sister could see her.
Correction: UConn’s player rotation minutes for the 2013-14 season are already claimed, unless there is a rash of severe injuries. That is a big reason why Geno has been more concerned with recruiting 2014 HS seniors than 2013.
Angel – I have not seen a high school basketball game in a very long time so I have no way to rate the raters. So I will not pick on the systems that gave Laura the numbers she had. The bottom line is ultimately someone on the UConn staff did see her, probably more than once and thought there could be a role for her at UConn so a ride was offerred and accepted. It does not make a bit of difference if Lauren was 1-never as good as rated,
2-declined in her skill set after arriving or 3- was simply out played by other talent on the team (welcome to the real world). Given the current roster of point and shooting guards and “swing” players…..KML, Hartley, Faris, Doty, Jefferson, Banks, and the ‘bigs’ of Dolson, Stewart, Stokes, Tuck, and Buck, you can easily see where her talent level put her. # 12 in the rotation with virtualy no chance to move up in the pecking order. So she goes to BC, sits a year, gets her practice time in and waits patiently for the 13/14 season. I have no clue about that roster but maybe at that point she begins to raise the court time she might see. Was never going to happen in Storrs.
Bill—-Uconn has made many mistakes in selecting players. But hardly ever do they make mistakes in “attitudes”. Lauren was a fair to middleLin player with a good attitude. Which she maintained at UConn. Geno and Lauren saw the same things you saw and she knew she wasn’t going to play , EVER. But at Boston she has a chance, as small as it is. Remember BC isn’t Towson. They have talent. Back to mistakes. Uconn makes few of them but it seems periodically Geno blows it completely—Laurens class was one. But UConn wishes Well to Lauren, Walker, Johnson. It appears they may never wear a championship ring, but being a loosey goosey student may be better.
Bill—MEANT to add. Geno in his comments about losing Lauren mentioned (paraphrasing) how difficult it was to coach 11 player who knew what they were doing and one or two or 3 that either couldn’t or would’t put in the effort. I have no way of knowing if this applies to Lauren. So I think after he got the new 3 Geno made it known (guessing) they’d had NO playing time and it would be better if they transferred. Then he could concentrated on Freshmen who needed extra help rather than a Junior who should know what she has yet to learn. He’s always said his efforts in coaching will be toward the Frosh and Sophs because he expects he Senior to know the system . Buck is a special case. She will be a small game back up. But she showed up in the Baylor games.
It is still too easy for 1 or 2 players to be “all world” in high school because the competition is not great. Buck was CT POY twice but all her confidence disappeared once she stepped onto UConn’s practice floor. Jefferson will have a difficult time adapting to UConn WBB (and UConn campus life) after home schooling and playing teams with home schoolers. The competition level for the “home” school leagues is lower than the “normal” high school leagues and much lower than the “recruiting high school” teams like where KML went.
