Debbie Fiske To Make Debut Tonight On WTIC
Just a reminder that there is no television coverage of tonight’s preseason opener for the UConn women against Indiana (Pa.) at Gampel Pavilion.
The game starts at 7. So here’s what I suggest you do; follow me on twitter at @jaltavilla for game highlights and listen to WTIC-1080 for the play-by-play. There you will hear Bob “Voice Of” Joyce and his new partner, Debbie Fiske, who is replacing Kara Wolters, now working for SNY.
Geno Auriemma was asked what he remembers about Fiske, who was known as Debbie Baer when she played point guard for the UConn coach from 1989-92.
“She may have been physically the strongest point guard we’ve ever had,” Auriemma said. “I don’t think in four years at Connecticut, or when I saw her play in high school or AAU, that I saw anybody take the ball from her. She never gave the ball up and she led her team to the Final Four (1991). That alone makes her qualified to be a part of the media because she has had that kind of success.
“What troubles me is that she is the only point guard I had who didn’t speak. So I don’t know how she is going to do on the radio because she didn’t speak [at UConn}. She is certainly a lot more vocal now than she was as a player and I think somehow or another that WTIC managed to find somebody who will talk as much as Kara [Wolters] did.
“They did go to extremes, they went from 6-8 [Wolters' height] to 5-5, so there is a big difference in what you are going to hear tomorrow and what you heard from Kara but a different perspective on the game from a point guard to a center.
“I am excited. I hope people come to the game, I hope people listen on the radio. It is a new season, a whole new group of TV people, a new group of radio people, a new group of freshman. It is an exciting time to be a part of UConn basketball.”

John, I tried to listen to the women’s game on WTIC am via stream, like in years past. All I got was “talk radio” stuff. One of WTIC’s screens stated that the women’s games weren’t being streamed on WTIC.COM, but they had a message to “click here” to receive a stream of the game. All I got was more “talk radio”. Hopefully you or WTIC will have some info on how I can listen to the 2nd game down here in Lutz, FL
Mert, for $60 you can subscribe to SNYTV and get 20 games streaming on the computer. From one old Aetna guy to another older Aetna guy.

Hi John,
I had the same question as Mert. I went through the same process with the same frustrating result. I tried the same thing last night with the Men’s game. I find it very difficult to get a decent signal from WTIC down here in Hamden, which is why I always listened to the radio broadcast through my laptop.
Ditto, here in NYC when I tried listening on my laptop. Last night with men’s game I was able to listen to it on UConn radio station WHUS via the internet, but not tonight for women’s game (WHUS covered men’s hockey instead). Instead I “watched” the UConn GameTracker, which has no audio.
Maybe the next exhibition games (men & women) will be broadcast on WHUS.
this is the deal folks..IMG College owns the broadcast rights to UConn Football and both basketball radio broadcasts. WTIC is just an affiliate and is no longer allowed to stream the games. If you want to listen online, you must go to Huskies All Access at uconnhuskies.com. And it’s not free..
Forget free streaming audio–it’s gone like the horseless carriage. We are now in a world where what was once free is now a commodity and chargeable. Soon you will be paying to read and extra charge to comment on Johns Blogs. Believe it, they can’t sell real paper papers, so charge for online news. John doesn’t work for free, and the Courant is in business to make money, as is WTIC–but UConn is pay for by YOUR taxes–like to see how long they’d stay in business without your taxes.
SNY does not broadcast the next game. It starts it 20 game contract with Charleston. On the 11th (I think).
