Connecticut Sun head coach Anne Donovan has added longtime aid Catherine Proto to her first coaching staff.
“I have had the pleasure of working with Catherine for the last five years in both the WNBA and at Seton Hall,” Donovan said. “Catherine has a great basketball mind. Her seven years of experience with the New York Liberty will be a tremendous asset to our staff.”
Proto was a Donovan assistant at Seton Hall. Prior to that, she spent seven seasons as the manager of scouting and video operations for the New York Liberty. Proto assisted in the preparation of practice, team strategies and opponent scouting. An extension of the coaching staff, she also oversaw the development of the team’s playbook, coordination of all live advanced scouting, travel and budget as well as the taping and breaking down of practice, games and opponent’s film, film exchange, development of team and opponent tape breakdown and creation of individual player film.
“I am very excited to be joining the Connecticut Sun organization,” Proto said. “I look forward to continuing the winning tradition in Connecticut and working alongside coach Anne Donovan again this season.”
Proto interned in the Liberty’s video operations department in 2000 and 2001 before joining the team fulltime in 2002. Prior to the Liberty, Proto was the director of basketball operations for the women’s basketball program at the University of Rhode Island. She also worked as an intern at the Women’s Sports Foundation in the awards and grants department.
A 2001 graduate of Springfield College with a Bachelor’s degree in sport management, Proto spent two seasons as a member of the women’s basketball team that won back-to-back NEWMAC Championships (2001 and 2002) and made two NCAA Tournament appearances. She received a Master’s degree in physical education from Springfield College in 2002.
