You’ll recall about a month ago the story I did on former UConn center Kelly Schumacher’s desire to become an Olympic beach volleyball player after a long career in the WNBA.
Perhaps that is still the case. But for now, it seems she has put things on hold.
Schumacher, who played for UConn’s’ 2000 national championship team, has signed with Rivas Ecopolis (Madrid).
“I got a bug to go play basketball and volleyball is somewhat dead right now, regardless of what my hopes and dreams are,” Kelly said in a email Thursday night. “So I’m going to give it a shot to be a true dual-sport athlete; basketball this winter, then back to the sand next summer!
“I’m also trying to fight the urge to go back to the WNBA this summer!”
Schumacher was a first-round pick of the Indiana Fever in the 2001 WNBA draft and played in the WNBA for four different teams from 2001-2009.
