Ah, paid attendance for Division I women’s basketball. What a complicated and tasty subject.
The NCAA has just released its figures for last season and as you will see, Tennessee again tops the charts. UConn was fourth in average, third in overall fans.
Thing is, these numbers are skewed by a number of factors, like cost of tickets (the cheaper the seats, the more fans) and the very way some schools count paid attendance. Who knows how many schools make accurate turnstile counts and how many estimate them. Hmmm?
Nevertheless, they all look the same in the box score.
Here are the NCAA numbers, compiled from Hoopfeed.com
NCAA women’s basketball attendance set an all-time high during the 2011-12 season. According to the NCAA, attendance for all three divisions was 11,210,832. The record broke the previous mark of 11,160,293 set in 2008-09. Overall, attendance was over 11 million for the fifth year in a row.
For the ninth consecutive year and 15th time in the last 16 seasons, Tennessee led all schools in attendance with 14,414 per game. Fans flocked to see the Lady Vols during Pat Summitt’s final year as head coach.
