Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said Tuesday  he “would not comment on hypotheticals” when asked if the university would someday support UConn’s candidacy to join the ACC.

“Twenty-eight years as an attorney has taught me never to [answer hypothetical question]. So I will pass on that hypothetical,” Swarbrick said.

Notre Dame and the Big East reached agreement Tuesday to allow the Irish to move immediately to the ACC after this season instead of delaying their departure until 2014-15.

“We said in September when we made the decision that we thought it was in everyone best interest [for the separation to take place],” Swarbrick said.

Swarbrick would not say whether Notre Dame was asked to pay an exit fee, saying only the university’s deal was the same as the Catholic 7 received to leave.

“It provided us a template,” Swarbrick said. “Whatever you feel the Catholic 7 deal was you can transport to us.”

Swarbrick said the ACC did not ask for any concessions from its football program in return for early entrance.  Notre Dame will play five ACC opponents each season while maintaining a strong non-conference framework.

“There are so many things about [the ACC], the academics, the institutions, the geography,” Swarbrick said. “It works very well for Notre Dame. We contemplate it being a long-term resting place.”

Swarbrick also said he hasn’t heard whether the ACC plans to expand beyond the 15 teams it will have next season. It will remain a 15-team league after next season when Louisville replaces Maryland, who will join the Big Ten

30 Responses to Notre Dame AD Mum On Question Of Future ACC Support For UConn

  1. Hip Hop Hood says:

When would ND support us moving to the ACC after all our anti-Catholic rants when BC then when the Catholic 7 left the Big East?

    • Don by 10 in the first half, 13 in the second and pull ahead. 10 seconds of bad ball in the last half and Uconn loses.
Great stuff by Stewie, Tuck, Stoks, Jeff-good by Dolson, Faris, Hartley–KML got lost for most of the game.

Good by Catholic 7. HHH was right why woul ND or he ACC expect ND to support UConn–Uconn was less than accepting of ND’s move.

  2. NiceGuardPlay says:

they should be happy ND is leaving…geno will get to coach less than he does now…18 seconds with the ball and a floor full of all americans and you can’t even figure out how to get a shot for your best player…great coaching geno. one for the record books.maybe less time talking about food and more time recruiting smart basketball players, maybe even a point guard, couldn’t hurt

  3. NiceGuardPlay says:

who cares…the huskies will just drift around waiting for the next round of mergers and acquisitions to happen…if the women’s game had any sense, they’d figure out how to implement some real competition in their sport…playing 30 games and hoping for 5 good ones just don’t cut it. it’s as boring as could be. stop worrying about lowering the rims and figure out how to make your season a little more interesting.

  4. NiceGuardPlay says:

this has got to be the plain dumbest less skilled team the guy has coached in years. fortunately for him the game is so bad that he can get away with it.

    • bogey29free says:

wow you sure seem to have alot to say for someone who hates the games so much, lots of other veiwing options out there, you didn’t have to watch the game.Unless of course you don’t get cable in your trailer.

  5. Dave says:

I have never seen a team self implode at the end of a game like this UConn team. This one is on Bria Hartley again, again, again! Oh Lewis what was that!

    • UCONN CHOKIES says:

FARIS STARTED IT OFF THAT DUMB A$$ PLAY BY HAVING NO WHERE TO GO AND THROWING A BAD PASS TO KML

      • bogey29free says:

and that was after she was lucky to get the ball back after shooting a layup into the bottom of the rim…but really, this whole team plays the game nervously under pressure, there is not one calming influence on this time.Their guard play has been horrible all year.KML was not good tonight,I’m sure chasing Kayla Mcbride around all night didn’t help her offensively, especially when all of Notre Dame’s defensive focus was on her, knowing that if she gets shut down,no one else would step up.Luckily because Breanna did,Uconn at least made it a game.

        • UCONN CHOKIES says:

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO LETTING ONE PLAYER SCORE AND SHUTTING DOWN EVERYONE ELSE?

  6. Olde dude says:

It’s a mystery to me why UConn women’s Bball would want to be in the ACC-Other than Duke and MD, whos is leaving the conference next year, and the addition of ND it’s just another Big East. Football? that’s another story.
Niceguardplay obviously “loves ‘ Gino and thinks Gino has magical powers to control what happens on the court!!. Even the refs don’t have that power though they strongly affect the play especially when they are whistle happy or lean to one side. It’s tough enough playing the other five guys on the court without also having to play the refs (No names mentioned).

    • UCONN CHOKIES says:

REFS WERE ON UCONNS SIDE ALL NIGHT CALLING PHANTOM FOULS ON OCHONWA. AND THAT WAS A CHARGE AGAINST TUCK THAT GOT GIFTED TO UCONN AS A PHANTOM BLOCKING CALL AGAINST NOTRE DAME.

      • bogey29free says:

The calls against Ochonwa were not phantom calls, they were al legit. The play with Tuck was a charge,no doubt. The call against farris when she cut into the passing lane and got to the ball first yet still got called for the foul, was horrible..the refs,as usual, were bad for both teams.

  7. UCONN CHOKIES says:

GENO AURIEMMA GOT OUT COACHED AGAIN. FARIS WITH THE WORST PLAY OF HER CAREER IN THE LAST 18 SECONDS. HARTLEY SUCKED AGAIN. KML WAS A NO SHOW.

  8. marion says:

Come on people – did everyone take a nasty pill tonight – yes we lost – yes I am upset but I am not going to bash any young kid – it is someone’s daughter or granddaughter. Try to be nice.

    • Mike1 says:

Those kids played their butts off tonite. Geno draws up plays that NEVER work which is probably why he didn’t even call a timeout with 2 seconds left in the game!!!!!!!He just lets Faris heave the ball full court. Insanity!!!!!

      • UCONN CHOKIES says:

GENO AND CD BLAMED THE REFS IN THE POST GAME. AS USUAL THEY NEVER TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. ONLY CREDIT. T

  9. UCONN CHOKIES says:

GENO GETS PAID MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO WIN 3 TITLES: BIG EAST REGULAR SEASON, BIG EAST TOURNAMENT, NCAA. THOSE ARE UCONNS 3 GOALS EVERY SEASON. UCONN RECRUITS A #1 PLAYER IN KML, A #1 PLAYER IN STEWART, A #2 PLAYER IN JEFFERSON, AND A #6 PLAYER IN TUCK. UCONN IS 0-2 IN THEIR 3 GOALS FOR THE SEASON. SOON TO BE 0-3. AND UCONN IS 1-4 SO FAR AGAINST BAYLOR, NOTRE DAME, AND STANFORD, THE OTHER THREE #1 SEEDS. DISAPPOINTING SEASON BY UCONN STANDARDS – SO FAR.

  10. JOHN WOODEN FROM THE GRAVE says:

I take back all my comments about how UConn womens basketball teams play the game the way it was meant to be played. I am ashamed that UConn’s head coach says he read my book. UConn’s head coach fails to lead by example when the going gets tough.

  11. beth says:

    hi everyone
so we lost do you all remember when we lost to villanova in the tourney in anew jersey and we won the national championship so we lost the big east tourney they played there hearts out so leave them alone they are only kids and no one is going to ebeat Baylor so get over it we are all spoiled that UConn lost again remember we have 17 big east tournements notre deame has one Rutgers has one and villanova has one and we have 7 national championships and notre dame has one so get over it
    be nice
they have two weeks to fix there problems
so they don’t have Diana taurasi and sue bird or maya moore but Carolyn doty and Kelly faris have a national championship but skylar diggings wont’ get a championship

  12. FIRE GENO says:

COACHING 101. YOU HAVE A CENTER WHO SCORED 16 POINTS AND GRABBED 14 REBOUNDS. YOU HAVE 18 SECONDS. YOU DISCUSS OPTIONS DURING 2 TIMEOUTS. YOUR GRAND SCHEME: USE THAT SAME CENTER AS A DECOY AND SHE NEVER TOUCHES THE BALL. GAME OVER.

  13. Holly Tyler says:

Geno will be an analyst for mens college basketball on ESPN in 1 or 2 years

  14. GENO ADMITS FAULT says:

“It’s one of those plays where you only need two, so a score and a foul or just a foul [is enough]. When [Stewart] caught it I thought we were in great shape. I probably should have called a timeout when she dribbled down and passed it [to Farris]. I take responsibility for that.”

  15. marion says:

You are soooo right Beth – yes it was a heartbreaker for ‘our’ girls and for me but we will get through it. I just wish the UConn “haters” would get a life. Life itself is too precious to “HATE”.

  16. There is no question that Geno contributed to the last few seconds of confusion last night. He as admitted that and taken responsibilty for it. So, now let’s move on, and regroup for the Big Dance next week! Overall, I still want Geno driving the bus to the tournament.

  17. jamb says:

Let’s just admit it–the polls have it right. UConn is the #3 team in the country. ND is just a slightly better team–smarter, more mature, poised, and certainly has better guard play. No one on UC team could guard K.McBride all season. It was not a surprise that ND won, although UC was “oh so close”. Despite the poor play of the 1st half when UC couldn’t hold on to the ball, was tentative,& Kaleena never on track(credit ND), I was pleased with the 2nd half of UC’s play–they fought & scrapped to make it a game ESPN would love. The losing play, once again, came down to ND’s smarts and defense–and, perhaps, some not so great coaching decisions and refs just letting it play out. In any event, UC is #3 so far this season for a reason. Now let’s see how much they can mature & learn in time for the NCAA’s. This is what WBB parity is all about! At least there are a few new dominant teams/programs, but still a big “degree of difference” between the top 4 and the rest, unfortunately. The hardest thing to do is maintain yourself at the top. We UC fans really have nothing to complain about.

  18. fanofit says:

Got to say UConn is not looking looking for ND support. This was probably a dumb question asked by some jerk reporter.
