When Geno Auriemma heard that incoming freshman Morgan Tuck led the USA’s U18 team in scoring Wednesday against Puerto Rico at the FIBA Americas championship, he said it wasn’t a big deal because it was likely someone else would take center stage the next time the team played.

Auriemma was right.

On Thursday another UConn freshmen, the heralded Breanna Stewart, had game-highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds  with three assists and two blocks to lead the U.S. to a 68-28 victory over Argentina in the preliminary round of the tournament.

Argentina shot just 18.0 percent.

Tuck added 12 points in 22 minutes. Moriah Jefferson, the third Husky freshman on the team, had six points, four rebounds and a game-high six assists. Next for the US is Friday’s game against Colombia.
