The Sun passed on the numerous free agents who passed through waivers on Friday after being cut by the other 11 teams. Included in the group were veteran post players like Ruth Riley, Courtney Paris and Catherine Kraayeveld, who played for Donovan in New York.
The problem claiming veterans is the obligation to assume existing salaries, which in Riley’s case was for two years near the WNBA-max, which is just over $100,000 annually. That would have put a strain on the Sun’s salary cap, now comfortably under the $913,000 ceiling.
Should the Sun care to make a move now, they can negotiate a new deal with a player they are interested in signing.
