Tina Charles Is Eastern Conference POW (Again)
How appropriate that the two top candidates for MVP of the WNBA end the season as respective players of the week in their conferences.
Tina Charles of the Connecticut Sun and Candace Parker of the Los Angeles Sparks were named the WNBA’s Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week for games played Sept. 17 through Sep. 23.
In the Sun’s win over Indiana on Sept. 19 – Charles’ 100th game – she became the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 1,100 rebounds, surpassing the mark of Yolanda Griffith who needed 104 games to reach the milestone. Charles led the Sun past Indiana, 73-67, with 17 points and 12 rebounds, including 10 defensive boards.
Sunday, despite sitting out the fourth quarter of a 92-72 defeat of Atlanta, Charles logged 17 points and nine rebounds to finish the season with her third consecutive WNBA rebounding title (10.5 rpg). She also set a new franchise single-season scoring record, averaging 18.0 points
For Charles, the Player of the Week award was her fourth of the season and the ninth of her career.

Charles has become a rebounding beast that can score. As much as I liked her at Uconn, I never expected her to do this good in the WNBA. She has become one of the best two centers in the world.
AND SOMETIMES 3 PLAYERS COLLAPSE ON HER!!!!!
John. In case you’ve forgotten to most of us Veterans the initials P O W stand for Prisoner(S) Of War!! Be specific–use Player Of the WEEK or POTW, that works. But P O W is almost sacred to many of us. Thanks John. Thought you may have forgotten the forgotten.
Tina was a great Center her Senior and at the end of her Junior year she was very good. In the WNBA and Olympics she was the best Center in the world. But she needed Geno to control Cambage in the game against Australia. As a UConn Fan I am proud of Tina. One more point Steff Dolson in her freshman and Sophomore years was better than Tina, a more effective and consistent scorer–rebounding, not so much, but that will come. Tina wasn’t a great rebounder in first two UConn years either.
Steff is nowhere near as athletic as Tina, so the upside is not comparable.
