It’s no surprise that a vast majority, if not every single women’s basketball coach in the new American Athletic Conference, is happy about today’s news that the inaugural postseason tournament will be played at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
The coaches have been pushing for this move for years. They view the Mohegan Sun as step up in many areas; sophistication, dining and entertainment options, free parking, a nice recruiting vehicle and a great place to lure fans to visit and attend the games.
Five new schools join The American this season – SMU. Houston, Memphis, Central Florida and Temple, coached by former UConn assistant Tonya Cardoza.
I reached out to Tonya today to see what she thought of the news:
“I’m excited. I was hoping that it happened,” she said. “It’s one of my favorite places. Connecticut basketball fans will come out to support the tournament. The “neutral site” will be a great experience for the student/athletes. And it has great food. There’s no other place like it.”
