Update On The Bidding Process For 2014 Women’s BB Tournament

by Categorized: UConn women's basketball Date:

I know many of you have been wondering whether the UConn women will be able to host either first- and second-round games or one of the four regional finals of the 2014 NCAA Division I women’s basketball tournament.

Just wanted to you to know that it is very possible UConn will have the chance. The championship committee is now in the process of receiving host bids for the championship and the membership has been alerted to that it is now possible to host regional finals at home sites.

In June, the championship committee voted to allow a host institution to play on its home court during the regional rounds beginning with the 2014 championship. The current format does not allow for schools to play on home courts in the regionals.

The rationale  is to improve attendance and help make the broadcast of the games of the games look better. A criterion involved in this change is that institutions will not be allowed to host first- and second-rounds as well as regionals within the same championship season.

Also, the committee preference will be for host institutions to be limited to hosting a regional no more than two consecutive years, regardless of whether the same or a different competition venue is utilized.

Those who are interested in bidding (and UConn has said it is) have until August 9 to submit bids with all final materials due September 16

Sites for 2014 will be announced in early fall.  Also, the Committee will next be meeting on Oct. 22-23 in Indianapolis, with further decisions on tournament format for 2015 and beyond expected to be reached.
