USA Basketball Camp Likely To Include UConn Undergraduates

Geno Auriemma’s USA Basketball Women’s National Team will begin defense of the FIBA World Championship title with a mini-camp Oct. 4-6 at the Cox Pavilion practice gym on the UNLV campus in Las Vegas. The mini-camp will be used to identify athletes for the 2013-16 USA National Team pool.

Training camp will commence at 10 a.m. (PDT) on Oct. 4-5 and 9:30 a.m. (PDT) on Oct. 6. Athletes and court coaches who will be participating in the mini-camp will be announced at a later date.

Sources are telling me that a number of current UConn undergraduates, including Stefanie Dolson, Bria Hartley, Kalana Mosqueda-Lewis and Breanna Stewart, will be invited to the mini-camp to train with the Olympians.

“I’m really looking forward to kicking off the next four years with this training camp in Las Vegas,” said 2013-16 USA National Team and University of Connecticut head coach Geno Auriemma. “It’s going to give me a great opportunity to see some of the younger guys and how they fit into my system, as well as working with our veterans again. It’s been just over a year, but I can’t wait to start the process of trying to figure out how we can mesh all of our talent together and get ready for next year’s World Championship.”

The successful USA National Team program, which has won five-straight Olympic gold medals, three of four FIBA World Championship gold medals and has been ranked No. 1 in the world since FIBA launched its points ranking system after the 2002 World Championship, will compete in the 2014 FIBA World Championship (Sept. 27 – Oct. 5 in Ankara and Istanbul, Turkey), and if the USA qualifies, the 2016 Summer Olympic Games (Aug. 5 – 21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), as well as additional USA training camps and exhibition games.

Members of the USA Basketball Women’s National Team Player Selection Committee, which will select the USA National Team pool, include USA Basketball Women’s National Team Director Carol Callan; WNBA appointees Reneé Brown, WNBA Chief of Basketball Operations and Player Relations, Dan Hughes, San Antonio Silver Stars Head Coach and General Manager, and Chris Sienko, Connecticut Sun Vice President and General Manager; and three-time Olympic and two-time FIBA World Championship gold medalist Katie Smith, who played in close to 200 games for USA Basketball from 1993-2008, and serves as the athlete representative.
