Geno Auriemma coaches his 1,000th game at UConn on Feb. 22 at Houston. To commemorate the historic occasion, the Hartford Courant will occasionally share memories and remembrances from those who were with him along the way.
Here’s one from Wendy Davis, a member of his first Final Four team in 1991, and now the head basketball coach at Trinity College:
“I vividly remember our ’91 team at the Palestra in Philly. We beat NC State and then Clemson that weekend to go to UConn’s FIRST EVER Final Four,” Davis said. “We were so excited because we did it on Geno’s birthday weekend and near his hometown of Norristown, PA. Many of us were from PA, so we had quite a crowd there cheering us on. It was sort of a “Homecoming” for several players AND Geno. We felt like we gave him his best birthday present ever!”
