The Huskies returned home Tuesday night. Geno Auriemma stayed in Pittsburgh to prepare for his trip to Atlanta Wednesday to see the nation’s top junior guard, Diamond DeShields of Norcross, Ga.

Saturday, the team will be at Marquette for its final Big East road game before the regular season ends Monday at the XL Center against Notre Dame (13-1), currently atop the conference standings.

Much can happen between now and then that could impact UConn’s seed for the Big East tournament, which begins March 2 in Hartford.

None of it concerns Auriemma has much as making sure his team is prepared for whatever road it must travel.

“Every coach in America is going through the same thing at this time of the year,” Auriemma said. “The attention span of players today is about five seconds and then they can’t remember anything they did. Every coach is sitting there wondering how they can get their players to concentrate, focus more, pay attention to the little details that are so important.

“Many of the players in college basketball today have no idea how to do that. That’s why you see so much bad basketball. It’s not because they aren’t talented, it’s because they don’t have the ability to focus and concentrate and get things done, that need to get done, the way they need to get done, when they need to get done.”

So, if nothing else, the win Tuesday was about reinstalling the muscle memory that has already brought them so far this season.

“After the first two losses [at Notre Dame and Baylor] we told ourselves that we needed to change, but we actually haven’t done it,” said Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, who led UConn with 23 points against the Panthers.  “The St. John’s game proved it. We need to make sure that everything we’ve been working on in September is actually done in games.”

2 Responses to Winning Is Fundamental – At Least, For UConn

  1. Uconn has suffered lack of focus for more than half of their games. I cannot count the number of LAYUPS Uconn has missed. Hayes misses many, but when Doty and Faris miss them–something is amiss. Dolson takes too many rushed shots, brings the ball down to the shorties and is pressured by double teams. Hold it high, look for a cutter, pass. Easy game isn’t it?? KML is rattled by the opposition. Banks, is a jet fighter–ready to crash. Fouls too much, scores too little. Stokes needs to look to score more. But having said all that–three losses in a year is an amazing year for any team, except UConn. Getting past the Big East tourney without a loss will be the most difficult thing UConn has done in many a year.

  2. Mike McManus says:

This should be one of the most competitive BE tournaments in many years..UCONN, ND, St.John’s,Georgetown, WVA, and Louisville all have a chance to win it all though certainly the first three listed should be favored. It’s a much stronger league than it has been and there are some superior athletes on all of the teams I’ve listed. even Rutgers is capable of an upset. Some of these BE teams can definitely make some noise in the NCAA tournament.
