UConn and WTIC News Talk 1080, and more importantly, the UConn-IMG Sports Network has announced a new multi-year agreement to broadcast football, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball games and all pre-game and post-game programming.

WTIC News Talk 1080, the only 50,000-watt AM station in the state, has been the radio flagship station of UConn athletics for 20 seasons. But this is first time UConn radio rights are held by IMG College, which is the Huskies’ multi-media rights partner.

What does this mean? Well, football and men’s basketball will again be called UConn’s voice, Joe D’Ambrosio, who will handle play-by-play for the 21st straight year, and Wayne Norman, UConn’s radio analyst for football and basketball since 1981.

Kevin Nathan will report from the sidelines and Bob Joyce will serve as the pre and post game host. Joyce will also serve as the play-by-play announcer for women’s basketball.

“We are very pleased that WTIC News Talk 1080 will continue to serve as the flagship station of UConn athletics and look forwards to working with our partners at IMG to build the best radio network possible,” said UConn Director of Athletics Warde Manuel. “Generations of Husky fans have grown up listening to UConn on WTIC and we are glad that will continue. In addition, we feel that our listeners will enjoy the enhancements that IMG brings to our product.”

What hasn’t been announced yet is how on-line streaming of the games will be handled; whether it will be available on WTIC’s site or UConn’s athletic site or whether there will be a charge.

  1. Thank you. I was for a minute thinking we’d not be getting Bob Joyce announcing/calling the Women’s games. Bob is the very best of all who call the Women’s games. He paints a picture of the game, he tells who’s in who’s not. Who was fouled who caused the foul and how many. No talking about some unrelated B.S. What do those other callers think we are watching a fashion show–it’s Basketball and they need to remember that’s what we want to know about, the game.
Bob Picozzi on CPTV (hopefully SNY) is the TV equal to Bob Joyce. Joe D has forever been great calling the Men’s game.
Thank you UConn. Thank you TIC!!!!

Unfortunately, this leaves Fairfield County without a radio presence. Those of us who live in the western part of the state can’t receive WTIC. Let’s hope that there’s another option for us.

Good news! WTIC comes in well after dark (and sometimes before) here in Maine, and I look forward to listening in the car when out and about during the late fall-winter-early spring.

I’m so glad to hear that WTIC will continue to broadcast the football & basketball games, as the play-by-play and commentary is second to none. I am hopeful that those of us that live in Fairfield County will have the option of streaming live (with no charge) as so many times we just can’t pick up the radio signal. Congratulations for the continued partnership, one that has been in place for generations of happy UConn fans!

  5. Debbie–JSM, I’ve listened to WTIC broadcasting the UConn Women games –ON THE INTERNET AT WTIC.COM –LISTEN
Way down here in Virginia. I’d rather listen to WTIC on the internet than listen to those idiots on CBS, ESPN (except Rebecca). So if you are in Conn. Get the games on SNY and listen to Bob Joyce and Kara or Joe D and listen to games as they were meant to be called. By professionals.

  6. In the colder months WTIC signal will reach florida, along the coast because of signal bounce and heavy atmospherics. The Engineers at TIC can tell you more about it if you send an email to them. They may tell you who and where their signal is being received –also they switch their antenna’s when the signal is too strong way down south, ask about that too.
